I don't think we're in college anymore Toto...

Apologies for my blog absence recently. I am currently without Internet at my house and the blog is blocked on the Internet at work. I can't imagine why.

Last night I went out with some girls from work for dinner, drinks and dancing. The dinner and drinks all went to plan and then we went on the hunt for some dancing...

I graduated from college about 3 years ago. I also graduated from going to sleazy clubs 3 years ago. In fact, even in college, I rarely went to the type of club we found ourselves in. You know the type: loud music, cheap drinks, girls in short skirts, guys ogling, the smell of sweat mixed with the smell of people on heat. I wasn't a fan back in college of the type of guys that were in that place and I'm even less of a fan now. They really should've grown out of it.

My friend and I (everyone else had gone home at this point) surveyed the scene. It didn't look promising. I spotted a couple making-out quite, um, vigorously. I pointed them out to my friend Helen saying: "Aw look, they're getting an STD." I'm definitely not in college anymore.

We decided that as we had come for dancing then we might as well dance and the music was good. However, can I just ask, what right do men think they have to stare at girls and then grab their waists? Or come up to girls and start, what can only be described as gyrating, in front of them? It's disgusting. It was almost like they thought that because they paid £10 to get into the club, they had the right. Never do they have the right.

I know that in the past I have complained about British men and their lack of confidence when it comes to approaching women. Perhaps I should clarify: the British men that are sleazy, sweaty and downright repulsive, under no circumstances, do I want them to approach me. The nice, grown-up men who aren't drunk and think that it is highly inappropriate to grab a girl when they're dancing may by all means approach me. Unfortunately as we all know, we can't always get what we want in life.

By 2am Helen and I were fed up of the meat market and left with the scent of heat clinging to our clothes and our feet sore from our toe pinching shoes. We headed back to mine for tea and toast.

I'm so glad I'm not in college anymore.

So this is why I'm still single...

My apologies for being absent from the blog for awhile, I've had a visitor in the form of mine and Vi's other half (third?) Jen. Vi - we missed you!!

As well as Jen and I having oodles of fun after almost 2 years apart we also discovered something very interesting...the reason why I am still single. The answer?

British men.

They. Are. Hopeless. Seriously. You may recall I have previously voiced my opinion about British men and the differences in dating between here and on your side of the pond. But it is much worse than I thought.

Jen and I were out one evening. She was on a mission to find me a man. I wished her luck but said it wasn't gonna happen. I explained that I wasn't being self-deprecating but that British men don't really approach women and that we should go out simply with the mission to get drunk and dance. Jen was not to be dissuaded. Here is how the evening unfolded:

Bar #1: Pisco Sours were consumed. Jen seem surprised that there was a group of guys standing near to a group of girls but the guys weren't approaching the girls at all. I resisted the urge to say "I told you so."

Bar #2: Cocktails and a shot of sambuca and tequila was consumed. Jen and I sat sipping (well, glugging) our cocktails. We weren't approached. Jen was started to get irritated. We decided to dance. Jen gave guys a (non-scary and non-threatening) look as if to say: "if you come talk to us, we won't send you away." That didn't work.

Bar #3: Cocktails and more tequila was consumed. Jen asked a guy who was looking at us if he wanted to do a shot with us. He walked away looking a bit scared. We danced some more. Jen admitted I was right about British men. I normally like being right, but not this time.

I should mention that Jen is a really pretty girl, she's blonde and tanned and even I was a little bit surprised that the only guy that wanted to chat to her was the Colombian coat check guy. See? British guys are USELESS.

It seems that the only way people meet their 'significant others' over here are in college or travelling situations.

Case #1 My First Boyfriend: we met at college where meeting people is so much easier. Namely because of the alcohol.

Case #2 Fergus: we met in Peru, in that travelling type of situation where native English speakers tend to stick together.

Intrigued by my own personal experience I had a think about the couples that I know and how they met. Of my poll of 10 couples the results of how they met are as follows:

College: 6
Travelling situation: 2
Online Dating: 1
Work: 1

It seems that in order to increase my chances of meeting someone I need to either:

a.) Go back to school. Not too keen on that one.
b.) Move to the US. Very keen on this one except I've recently discovered people only get 10 vacation days a year. Seriously?! I get 26. How do you manage with 10?

Or I could meet either a confident British guy or an American or Australian. That would do nicely.

Until then, hooray for cocktails and tequila!

A Social Experiment

"I'm a little perplexed by dating habits (if you can call them that) of British men. Here I thought all British men were Colin Firth/Hugh Grant types who learn another language and spontaneously fly to Portugal to ask their lady loves to marriage them. It's like the movies aren't real or something."

Vi, as usual, has hit the nail on the head.

I'm very proud of the fact that my blogging means that WWBD? is international. But this comes at a cost. I have to ruin the Colin Firth/Hugh Grant/Mark Darcy/Mr Darcy dream. It doesn't exist. At all. Or rather, they don't exist, at all. Oh the accent exists. But when you hear it you automatically think 'snob' or 'public school'. Public school over here is not a good thing. Public school types are conceited and arrogant and not in the good Mr Darcy type way.

And now for the dating habits of British men. They don't exist either. A guy over here has NEVER asked for my number. I am forever jealous of Vi's emails where she mentions a guy who asks for her number and then, actually calls. Reference: Popcorn Man. This is how it works in the UK:
* Guy and girl meet in bar
* Copious amounts of alcohol is consumed
* Guy and girl start flirting
* Some type of physical action occurs
* Numbers are exchanged
* Congratulations! You know have a boyfriend / girlfriend. (This may only last for a few hours)
Sometimes you meet up again and then start getting to know each other. There is no (sober) interaction involving friendly chat and then the guy takes your number. I'm sure there is the odd occasion where this does occur- I've yet to witness or experience it.

It's extremely frustrating. I would love for a guy to ask for my number. Even if I wasn't interested I would just like it to happen. I would also like to try the American way of dating. Yes, I'm sure it has its pitfalls, but it seems a heck of a lot better then the system we have over here.

What makes it even more frustrating for me when reading Vi's emails is that I like American men. I don't get the appeal of the British guy (except Mark Darcy, but he is, sadly, a literary figure), they're scrawny and have a severe lack confidence amongst other things. But an American guy? Yes please! You may disagree but they do say that the grass is always greener.

You may think that my opinion on American guys is unfounded and I'm not cutting British guys much slack. So it seems only fair that I conduct a social experiment - and I have a degree in Sociology so I can conduct social experiments. This time tomorrow I will be on a plane heading to the US for the first time in 10 years. Not only am I visiting the wonderful Violet but she has said, nay promised, that I will get to meet lots of cute American men. I can chat to them, see if they really are the confident and funny guys I think they are. I can also see if they actually do this asking for your number thing I hear so many things about (obviously not mine as my weird accent will give it away I'm not from those parts, but I could observe it happening to others).

So I will make the effort to talk to cute guys and report back to you all. It's all in the name of WWBD? Not for personal enjoyment or anything. And I am sorry to ruin the 'British Man Fantasy'. Really I am.
